TNK (ThiNK) green is a multidisciplinary design and lifestyle practice that embraces a holistic approach to design. We are committed to sustainability and creating products of value with the smallest carbon footprint possible, from conception to completion.

Our focus is on creating spaces and products that are enough—not more, not less than what is necessary—and making sustainable choices along the way that allow both humans and the planet to thrive. Our aesthetics present good design and sustainability on the same page. This starts with applying practical thinking to our design process. Growing these ideas into real spaces and products, and dwelling green with longevity.

Design

Established in 2020, we are a small practice that prides ourselves in bringing our client’s dreams to reality by implementing good design and sustainable principles. We believe in creating and adding exceptional value to all the projects we choose to get involved with. This also promotes personal and environmental health.

We believe in and advocate for a simplistic, no-nonsense aesthetic in our designs that are holistically informed by location, climate, construction material, and the environment to provide something more than just a home.

We promote environment-friendly and responsible construction methods and materials. This means less reliance on concrete, brick, or steel in our buildings, minimizing its embedded energy, and maximizing efficiency.

Hernes Kruger is the founding member and director of TNKgreen. With 18 years of design and construction experience, your projects and dreams are in safe and professional hands.

We specialize in residential projects but also have experience in retail, corporate, and hospitality design. Whether you’re dreaming of a sustainable home or office feel free to contact us for a consultation and design quote.

Landscaping

At TNKgreen we believe a garden is a sanctuary for both humans and wildlife. A good garden can connect us with nature and help to feed us, both physically and mentally. Plants can provide an environment of tranquillity and clean the air around us. As a bonus, we can also promote biodiversity. A garden is never really complete, rather it’s a constantly developing living artwork.

Whether you are looking for a cottage garden, a wildflower wonderland, a food forest, a small garden or an indoor plant display we can help to bring it to life. We also install green walls and roofs.

Making use of indigenous and drought-tolerant plants, we create low-maintenance landscapes that will give its users year-round interest and joy. Adding structure with walkways, water features, and by making use of selective feature plants your garden is transformed into a space that fills you with joy. Long-term growth and development is the goal in mind. The end of every installation is only the beginning of the journey…

Collaboration on nature rehabilitation and rewilding projects are welcome. Regrettably, landscaping services are currently only available in the greater Pretoria region. Please contact us for a consultation and installation quote.

Lifestyle

At TNKgreen Lifestyle we strive to provide our clients with quality, handmade, sustainable products and accessories for the indoor plant enthusiast’s home, or office.

All our décor items are handmade and hand-printed on hemp fabric. We strive to limit waste and offcuts by approaching patternmaking such as origami.

We go out of our way to find unique pots and art from local artists and to showcase their wares to a wider audience.

All our products are packed in 100% recyclable or biodegradable material.

PLANT FURNITURE

Our plant furniture is made from pine and finished with teak oil. All our furniture items are simple in design so as not to distract attention from the beauty of the plants on display.

Currently, only offering delivery of assembled pieces for local distribution, we also offer self-assembly options for those further afield. Requests for custom builds are also welcome, so contact us if you have something more specific in mind.

WHY PINE?

Wild-cut timber is destructive and accelerates deforestation. We looked around for responsible foresting options, but without a clear origin of most African or Asian hardwoods, we rather opted to use pine that has been responsibly cultivated in South Africa for years and, therefore, has a smaller carbon footprint. We continue to find more interesting options for our consumers and once we can verify and source other sustainable timber, we will notify all our followers.

DÉCOR

Our handmade décor items are all designed to provide our clients with a simple, practical style. Our scatter cushions bring the abstract textures of nature into your living room while our bags are all designed to be durable and even biodegradable.

We strive to provide quality items for the environment-conscious consumer. All our items are made with sustainably-grown hemp canvas.

WHY HEMP?

Fast-growing, pest resistant, and waterwise hemp can produce a high yield of versatile fibres that can also be used to make sustainable materials, from biodegradable plastics to building materials.

It can also combat climate change: the hemp plant is ideal for nourishing nutrient-depleted soil and reversing the effects of erosion, making it ideal for crop rotation.

PLANTERS – GEOMETRIC RANGE

The range of stoneware planters created by artist Hernes Kruger was inspired by the strong geometry of crystals (the molecular bonds) found in nature. These slip-cast containers are all hand cast and finished. With their unglazed matt finish, these vessels work well for a wide selection of small to medium size indoor plants. Treat them like you would any terracotta pots.
